Harvest

Above left My uncle's wife Irene wearing an embroidered shirt and a vinok of flowers on her head. The soil was rich and the wheat grew high. This was desirable as the straw was useful in the barn, as roofing, insulating the house in the winter etc. A high fence was built around the house and the space filled with straw for winter insulation. What a fire hazard!  Right: The hired hand has just brought a wagonload of something and has stopped in our driveway. The fence in the background is on the far side of the road, which, if followed to the right led to Zolochiv.  My friend Kisyk's house is on the right.

Above: Women harvest our potatoes, loading them into sacks and on the wagon. My grandfather and mother watch.
