Above left: Thatch roofed homes are on the far side of our
poppy field. The poppy seed was used to make a sweet pastry filling and kutia
a traditional wheat/honey Christmas dish. Right: My parents, grandfather
and I by the pond with thatched cottages in the background.
Left: Vasyl Mazur, who looked after the farm for my grandfather, standing in
our orchard with part of the villade on the far side of the square by the
church. The fruit tree trunks were painted with whitewash to keep vermin away.
When the Germans arrived Vasyl hid some of our food supplies around the barns as
they were confiscating everything, and had a heck of a job keeping me from
poking around! If only my uncle knew I'd be creating a website! There would be
more and better village photos!
